The overall distance north/south is about 70 miles, with the maximum distance to most lofts being 45 to 50 miles. Races take place from Saxavord, from the north, and from Fair Isle in the south. These races involve flying over the sea. The occasional race is held from the UK mainland, the furthest successful to date being about 350 miles (from Morpeth, England).
